After a Sandstorm: Washing Your Car Without Scratching It

A shamal rolls through, and every car in Dubai wears a beige coat by morning. What happens in the next hour decides whether your paint survives it. Desert dust is not dirt — it is fine, hard, abrasive particulate, and dragging it across paint with a cloth, a duster, or even a wiper blade is sanding, just slower. Almost every badly swirled bonnet in this city earned it the day after a storm.

The three mistakes that cost paint

• The feather duster guy in the car park. It moves the dust around under pressure. Politely decline.
• Running the wipers dry to clear the windscreen. That is grit under a rubber blade — permanent arc scratches in the glass.
• A quick wipe with whatever cloth is in the boot "just so I can see out". One dry wipe on a dusty panel does more damage than a year of proper washing.

The safe sequence

The rule is simple: nothing touches the paint until the dust has been floated off it. A proper post-storm wash runs pre-rinse first — real water pressure, top down, lifting the loose layer — then a thick pH-neutral snow foam that clings, encapsulates the residue and carries it off in the rinse. Only then does a wash mitt touch the car, working in straight lines with the two-bucket method so any grit picked up leaves the mitt in the rinse bucket instead of returning to the paint. If the storm was a bad one

Heavy storms drive dust into every seal, vent and shut line, and the interior gets its share through the AC intake. After a major shamal it is worth stepping up from a standard wash: door jambs and shut lines flushed, a proper interior vacuum and vent clean, and the cabin filter checked if the AC has picked up a dusty smell. And if the damage is already done

Swirls from years of post-storm wiping are not permanent — they sit in the clear coat and machine polishing removes them. That is a paint correction job, from AED 1,400 with free collection.
