How to Remove Scratches from Car Paint: A Dubai Guide

Every scratch question starts with the same five-second test: drag a fingernail across it, perpendicular. If the nail glides over, the scratch lives in the clear coat and machine polishing can remove it completely. If the nail catches, the scratch has gone through the clear coat — and no polish, pen, or miracle compound will fix it, whatever the label promises.

Clear coat scratches: polishing removes them

Light scratches, swirls, and marring sit in the transparent top layer of your paint. Machine polishing levels the surrounding clear coat down to the bottom of the scratch, erasing it — this is paint correction, from AED 1,400 at Washii including free collection, done indoors under inspection lighting with paint thickness measured throughout. Through the clear coat: paint, not polish

A scratch showing white (primer) or grey (metal), or one your nail catches in, needs material added, not removed — touch-up paint for chips and short scratches, or a panel respray for long, deep ones. A respray at a quality Dubai body shop runs roughly AED 400–1,200 per panel. Be careful with cheap smart-repair quotes on metallic and pearl finishes: a poorly blended panel is more visible than the scratch was, and inspection apps flag resprayed panels on resale.

What to stop doing

• Scratch remover pens and "nano" pastes on deep scratches — they fill with wax that washes out in weeks.
• Hand-rubbing compound in circles — you will thin the clear coat unevenly and add swirls around the scratch.
• Toothpaste. It is a mild abrasive with no lubrication and no cut control. The internet is wrong on this one.
• Ignoring bare metal. Dubai humidity plus coastal salt will start corrosion in a scratched-through spot within weeks — at minimum get touch-up paint over it quickly.

Prevention, in order of effectiveness

Most paint damage in Dubai comes from washing technique and road debris, in that order. Fix the washing with a pre-rinsed, two-bucket routine (or a service that follows one). Fix the road debris with paint protection film on high-impact areas or the full body — PPF absorbs stone chips and self-heals light scratches, which is why it is the standard choice on new premium cars here.
